Ed Curtis

NGB Instructor Trainer

Dinghy and Powerboat Trainer with a global client base, specialising in developing confident watersports instructors and delivering expert water safety guidance to individuals and organisations around the world. My approach is shaped by years of hands‑on experience across a wide range of environments, from calm coastal waters to some of the most demanding conditions on the planet.

Working closely with RYA Cymru Wales, supporting Recognised Training Centres with volunteer training, RYA compliance and the day to day challenges of club life.

I’m also an Atlantic rower with a story to tell — The World’s Toughest Row was an adventure that deepened my understanding of resilience, preparation, and the mental strength required to face the unknown. That journey still influences the way I teach, coach, and support others, whether they’re taking their first steps afloat or refining advanced skills.

As a keen windsurfer and dinghy sailor, I’ve spent a lifetime chasing wind and water. When I’m not travelling for training or safety work, I’m based on an upland sheep farm with my family, where the rhythm of rural life offers a grounding counterbalance to my time on the ocean.

My work blends technical expertise with real‑world experience, helping people and organisations build the confidence, competence, and mindset needed to thrive on the water — whatever conditions they meet.

With over 30 years of full-time experience in the watersports industry, I help organisations, governing bodies, and training centres deliver safe, effective, and high-quality watersports programmes—anywhere in the world.

I specialise in instructor and coach development, technical consultancy, and project leadership across a wide range of watersports disciplines. My work combines deep practical experience with a clear, structured approach to safety, logistics, and standards, allowing clients to build robust systems that perform under real-world pressure.

As Director of NJW Training and Consultancy, I work extensively with international clients, supporting the development of new watersports centres, advising on technical and safety frameworks, and delivering instructor, trainer and coach education to a consistently high standard. I have led and helped develop national training schemes, recruited and managed teams, and contributed to the creation of resources and publications used across the industry.

Alongside this, I have worked closely with the RYA for many years in senior coaching and advisory roles, including leading race training programmes, developing aspiring trainers, and supporting inspection and quality-assurance processes. My experience of working at and subsequently heading the department at a large National Centre gave me extensive experience in operational leadership, health and safety management, staff development, and large-scale programme delivery.

Prior to coaching, I raced a number of classes of dinghy at national level before turning my focus to youth coaching and subsequently to developing new coaches and CPD programmes to keep them current and effective.

Clients value my calm, practical approach, my ability to communicate clearly at all levels, and my focus on delivering outcomes that are safe, sustainable, and fit for purpose. Whether supporting a new centre, developing instructors and trainers, or advising on technical and operational challenges, my aim is always the same: to help organisations raise standards and deliver confidently.
